Nokia N97 Gets v20 Firmware Update

October 27, 2009

Nokia Software Update application Today saw the release of the long awaited v20 firmware update which was expected to bring kinetic scrolling throughout all menus on the N97, being able to hold keys down to access the alternative character/number when typing as well as some other much needed bug fixes. One important feature which was expected, Skype, is not included and is expected again, at a later date.

An excerpt of the change list from Steve Litchfield at All About Symbian:
Improvements in firmware 20.2.019 are:

  • A reworked memory mapping model – this means that applications use the (relatively) limited RAM much more efficiently and you should rarely see any memory errors. Note that the available ‘Free RAM’ after booting is now a lot less (around 47MB), but don’t take this raw number too literally – apps apparently use less RAM than before
  • Kinetic scrolling in the User Interface in all lists and larger-than-screen views
  • The keyboard driver has been enhanced so that a long press on any key brings up its associated ‘function’ symbol (or number)
  • Music player shows album art more reliably, plus extra MP3 ID3 information
  • Half a dozen new social media and services widgets have been added by default
  • Camera still and video improvements…

For those of you running a sim-free unlocked UK Nokia N97, the v12 update has only been able since the 17th of October, there may be quite a wait for v20 unless the posts on the Nokia forum have been read.

The update is probably only available to Euro sim-free variants but worth a try if you have a non-operator branded handset from another region. For more information check out this post on how to update your N97 firmware. Over the air updates using the built-in Software app may not be available for a few days.

V11 Update for Sim-Free Nokia N97 UK Available

July 13, 2009

N97 Software Version - Today, the v11.0.021 update for the UK variant of the sim free N97 has finally gone live. For those who were considering switching to the Euro product codes, you no longer need to do so. I have a Black UK handset on product code 0585162 which updated successfully.

Your methods for updating are as follows…

swupdateicon Using Over The Air update: on your phone go into Applications > SW Update. The SW Update application will check for an update, if one is available you will be asked if you want to update. As always, ensure your phone is fully charged and that you carry out a backup of essential data.

Ovi Suite: If you have Nokia’s beta version of the Ovi Suite installed on your PC, after connecting the N97, you can go to Tools > Software Updates. This will check for available updates which you can install from here also by clicking on update and following the instructions in the program.

Nokia Software Updater: Much like the update tool built into the Ovi suite and available with previous versions of Nokia’s PC Suite, this is also a PC based app but dedicated to updating your device.

A list of changes included in the update can be found over at

N95 Firmware Update – v20.0.015 is OUT!

November 26, 2007

Screenshot0007_2[UPDATE] As I was going through the phone’s settings one by one restoring my tones and programs, scrolling through the list of files to select my ringtone I noticed that one of the video clips appeared! The preview of the video clip worked so I set it as the ringtone. YES! N95s on v20.0.15 can now use video ringtones without having to rely on third-party software! Also, there is a new visualisation available called Circles in Music Player.

After the rumours and the pictures of new firmware, finally v20.0.015 is available for download!

Obvious changes are:
New search bar on the standby/home screen for the new Search 4.00 app
Nokia Share Online 2.07.37 installed
Nokia Maps v1.2 (wk37 b05) installed
My Nokia app.
N-Gage launcher app – get trials and the N-Gage app when released from here
New Music Folder containing Music Player, Radio (new icon), New Podcasting App and Music Store link.
Menu icons shuffled around – Office and Media folders now in Applications folder.
Themes icons gone from Tools folder.
Transfer app renamed to Switch.

Screenshot0001_3The word on the forums is that Demand Paging is included in this release so I tried my best to force a memory error out of the N95 on v20.0.15. I ran the Music Player and left it playing a track, fired up Nokia Maps, opened the web browser and loaded up a page over wi-fi, ran a search, opened the gallery, started the radio (no music) and then took a picture with the camera. All this and the phone didn’t throw up the memory error!

Having installed the venerable Dr Jukka’s Y-Tasks with Memory Status plugin, I was pleased to see 29MB of RAM free after startup. This remained after running a few apps such as Y-Tasks and Antony Pranata’s Screenshot. The amount of free memory, if I remember correctly, used to be around 14-18Mb at startup on v12 firmware. Bare in mind the higher availablility of ram is due to paging, basically what PCs do, where they write data to the hard drive and use that as a temporary memory for running processes.

The camera is faster at getting your images sorted out and ready for the next shot. There is also a grid overlay to allow you to frame your shots. Unfortunately the camera software doesn’t remember what setting or profile you last used such as the flash being off. Every time the camera is fired up, it reverts to the Auto scene mode. 😦
