BT Broadband, BT Yahoo, BT Internet, BT Total Broadband..you what?

June 23, 2006

Wireless BT Home Hub - photo: BT Group plcBT Yahoo! or is that BT Broadband, who cares, they’re providing another set of packages to compete with the low price ADSL providers. As they can’t drop prices on their packages just yet, they’re adding more features to existing packages and re-branding them.

Previously, there were 4 ‘Options’ each varying in speed (from 1Mb to 8Mb) and ‘guideline’ bandwidth allowance up to 40Gb download AND upload. Now the first 3 options have been rebranded and packed with extra features such as free security software, 250 wireless minutes for use at BT Openzone access points, free UK evening and weekend calls using your internet connection. All options now have a maximum possible download bandwidth of 8Mb. All of these new options come under the brand of ‘BT Total Broadband’ lovely, there’s nothing like telling BT’s Indian Customer Service Centre which package you’re on and which you want to transfer to.

Call Centre: What you want BT Yahoo? No sir you want WWW-dot-BT-Total-Yahoo-dot-com-broadband, thats good one.
Customer: No thanks, I don’t want any guff, just a broadband service.
Call Centre: No problem I shall put that through now sir.
Customer: WTF?

Options 2 and 3 come with a ‘Home Hub’ which is just some crappy wireless-enabled router with only 2 ethernet ports and future capability for BT Vision (IPTV not the videophone jobby) when it comes out later in the year.
Those on the existing Option 4 with a ‘guideline’ 40Gb limit will be upped to 50Gb or the opportunity to ‘take advantage’ of options 1 to 3..according to their email to customers.

So the options as BT provide them:

  • Option 1: Basic Security; 250 Wifi Mins; Free Eve and Weekend ADSL Calls; 2 Gb Monthly Usage – £17.99 a month and an 18 month contract!
  • Option 2: Security software including Norton AntiVirus and Personal Firewall; 250 Wifi Mins; Free Eve and Weekend ADSL Calls; 6 Gb Monthly Usage and Wireless BT Home Hub – £22.99 a month, 12 month contract.
  • Option 3: Security software including Norton AntiVirus and Personal Firewall; 250 Wifi Mins; Free Eve and Weekend ADSL Calls; 40 Gb Monthly Usage; Wireless BT Home Hub AND BT Hub Phone- £26.99 a month, 12 month contract.

The BT Hub Phone in Option 3 can be used to make use of the free evening and weekend calls through the hub and over the ADSL connection, nice….as long as you aren’t downloading. Maybe you won’t be with those usage limits!
